PLACE in Chile

The PLACE PROJECT is on Chile these days. The works of the 35 designers are being showcased in the Centro Cultural de España. This works are together with works of chilean designers and musicians, in a event called Circuito SCL. The PLACE Chile event is open from July 10 until July 30.

I was invited to participate by Ricardo Vega, great chilean designer and visual artist from Chile, and local coordinator of PLACE. I created some pieces for the exhibition. Here are pictures of the event.

Some months ago, there was a call for works about a new book called "La Nueva Grafica Chilena" (The New Chilean Graphic). We have 4 months since the call and we don't have any idea of what is going on with the project. However, here are mi little artworks for the book.

Old Things: Revistaciencias Magazine

I found that there is still on the air (jajaja, I mean, it is still available on the web) a very old web page. It was launched only to host the copies of the magazine "revistaciencias", named "lapsus" after two issues. Only three issues was edited and the... What can I say, bad things happens.
But, I thought I was lost the copies of the magazine and then, suddenly... I found the page.

Once, I colaborate with an event called "Human Rights fo all Project". This was a small project, actually. It would be nice to have more people writing and getting involved with this, but what the hell... Anyway, the website there is still active, and I want to show the essay that I wrote that moment.

From Chile, Country Sadly Remembered ...

... for a cruel and bloody dictatorship…

This phrase is real:

“There are people sick or elderly, that the one thing that they want is to leave this world with the face up, and not humiliated and ignored for a democracy that themselves helped to build and that excludes them now.”

There is any hope? So many countries and their citizens are fighting for their right to a democracy. They are in a stage that the people in Chile already suffered, 30 years ago. In that time, the hope was plenty and infinite in the minds of millions of Chileans. Until the ends of 80's, when the dictator Augusto Pinochet leaves the power. Then, a new power takes place of the goverment: the "left". Quickly, the "right" loses -apparently- their old power; the assasins fallen into the shadows. No guiltys, no responsibles of all the torture.

15 years later, Chile is a new country. It is a participant in the Security Council of the UN, and it makes treatments of economic exchange with USA and countries of Asia. Chile, a country with technology, peace, many cars and beautiful houses. Yes, the American dream. Which was the cost of all? To forget. All the torture and the crimes and all the people which destiny (I mean, the destiny or their dead bodies) is unknown. And, in a funny and disgusting move, the "right" makes a "Proposal for the Reparation of the Human Rights", offering economic compensations to all the families who suffered the lost of a relative.

Money in exchange of forget. Money in exchange of impunity.

Why the "right" makes this proposal? Because all the facts guide us to one conclusion: in the 2005, the "right", again, it will take place in the power. Why this? Because the people are dissapointed of a "left" that is full up with thieves, liars, all concerned about how to win more money than the neighbour, making their Company more powerfull and rich. While, one million of people (at least in the numbers of the Government itself) remain in the poverty… during 15 years!

Note this: I don't support the "armed fight", and any expression of violence. These are not words of a fighter (in this definition). But there are things that one don't - must not - forget. In this country, all is a fake. The peace, the justice… all the rights are for the rich people. The prosperity, the happiness. That is the image which "Chile" exports to you. And this is an extreme unjustice, because this country is beautiful, with so many artists, musicians, painters and poets, pretty landscapes. You are responsible, in your own country, of what is the country that you want to create. Don't trust in the Politics. The "left" and "right" doesn't exists. This is the "morale" from Chile. Only dreams exists. Even the dreams, with the time, takes a new dimension, and new thieves and liars appear in the power.

What can you make? I don't have the answers, obviously. Only one advice: don't support that the people forget the torture and the unfairness. Don't. That is the worst thing that you can make.

What is happening in Chile, right now? The families with "DD.DD" (people that was killed and which bodies never was found) have to live with the doubt, the eternal hope of a day in which the body of your son, husband, father, mother, appear. Many of these families are elderly. People with 70 or 80 years. These people are near to die. They must to carry their hopes and sadness to the other life. Is this "Justice"? Can money make forget this sadness and all the doubts and the desire of justice? This is the question. You must answer this and then, make the decision of what is the country that you want.

San Borja ::: One

This is where I live. There are 25 "Torres San Borja" (San Borja Towers), apartments constructed around 1965 or something. They survived a earthquake. But... they are all the same! No identity, it's like a mass production. I want to make something with this towers, to give them some nice touch.
